Many of the residential wells in the Trinity Aquifer are threatened by a private company from Houston called Electro Purification. This company now has at least 3 contracts to provide water from the Trinity for a minimum of 1.9 billion gallons a year.
Water will be supplied to:
- Goforth Special Utility District - 3 million gallons a day/1,095,000,000 gallons per year
- Anthem Subdivision by Clark Wilson Homes, a proposed MUD (Municipal Utility District) in the Mountain City ETJ - 1.3 million gallons a day/474,500,000 gallons per year
- City of Buda - 1 million gallons a day/365,000,000 gallons per year
The groundwater of the Trinity Aquifer in Hays County is protected from this type of water mining by the Hays Trinity Groundwater Conservation District and the Barton Springs Edwards Aquifer Conservation District. Generally, a permit is required to remove such large quantities of water. But the Electro Purification well field is located in the Edwards Aquifer Authority, which only has regulatory authority over the Edwards Aquifer.
Electro Purification is currently leasing or buying water rights in the area and testing wells on land along RM 3237. The company will pay for the construction of wells (approximately 20), pipeline, pumping stations, and water treatment. But Goforth Special Utility District, a public entity, is using their right of eminent domain to obtain all easements on private property for the pipeline which will cross private property from the well field to Mountain City ETJ, the City of Buda and to the Goforth delivery point just west of I-35.
Thus far, 7 test wells have been drilled on two parcels of land on RM 3237. The first 3 wells were drilled in late 2013 and early 2014 on land owned by the Bridges Brothers Family LP (owned by Robert A. Bridges and James A. Bridges), with an additional well drilled in January of 2015. In addition, 3 test wells are located on land owned by the Odell family (Laverne and Margie Odell and their children, Juanita Leinneweber, Eddie Ray Odell, and Roy Gene Odell).
